Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

We’re back! It’s almost time for more Ka Iwi Explorations 2020, but first we’re putting out a kāhea for mālama 'āina work and trail prep so things are safe and ready. Able to help? Email directors@hawaiikaihui.org

We have several different tasks to accomplish on the morning of Feb. 29th:

-Clear the jeep road beyond the new trail to the ridge, to determine if we can establish a loop trail. Remove koa haole, panini, and other weeds on the jeep trail which provides better views at the top of the ridge.

-Establishing a return loop trail (extension of trail from last year’s route). Remove koa haole, buffel grass, guinea grass and other weeds from around ma’o (native cotton), naio and a’ali’i.

-Collecting golf balls that flow over from the Hawaii Kai Golf Course (There are hundred of golf balls on the ground near the trail head).

Several groups will be working on different tasks, so you can choose what task you are most
comfortable performing.

Please wear long sleeve shirt, long pants, good hiking boots or outdoor shoes (no slippers), a hat or cap for sun protection, and raingear if the weather calls for it. Work gloves – leather or Kevlar is recommended – are necessary to protect your hands from the thorns of several plants growing in the area. Pack plenty of water (at least 2 quarts) and energy snacks. Sun screen is strongly recommended; insect repellant is desirable as there are mosquitos even at the higher elevations.

Bring tools that you are comfortable using:
-Hand pruner/clipper
-Loppers
-Sharpening file and stone
-Machete
-Mattocks (pick)
-Cordless sawall (and appropriate protective gear: eye protection, earmuffs)

We look forward to seeing you on the 29th!
