Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

The Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program (HEBCP), a field program of the San Diego Zoo Global, is seeking a motivated individual interested in a career-building experience. The non-profit HEBCP operates the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center on Hawaii Island, where endangered Hawaiian birds have been bred for release for 20 years. The HEBCP plays a key role in the ongoing ‘alalā reintroduction.

 

This research and avicultural experience is a six month opportunity for recent college graduates to gain experience in hands-on conservation management. This opportunity will be based at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center in Volcano on Hawaii Island. The successful applicant will learn and gain experience and skills in daily bird care and husbandry, as well as all components of applied research including data collection, analysis, and presentation. This experience will also include the opportunity to learn additional skills during workshops, complete learning courses, participate in seminar discussions, learn and assist with additional tasks important for daily operations at the facility, and work with and learn from external collaborators and partners.

 

The successful applicant will:

-display an enthusiasm and passion for saving species

-have a Bachelor's degree

-be at least 21 years old

-have a valid driver's license and clean driving record

-have health insurance for the duration of the position

-be able to identify diverse colored identification leg bands

 

Shared housing is provided on-site, as well as a $20/day stipend. This position will begin in Spring 2018, and the duration will be for six months.
