Position Title: Pacific Fire Exchange Coordination Assistant

Location: Preferably Kamuela, HI
Reports to: Elizabeth Pickett, Executive Director of HWMO and Clay Trauernicht, Wildland Fire Specialist, University of Hawaii
Pay rate: Hourly, 15-20 hours per week at $15-22 per hour. Pay commensurate with experience but total pay limited by grant funding
Preferred Start Date: ASAP

 

The PFX Coordination Assistant will work closely with the PFX Project Lead, Dr. Clay Trauernicht, to complete the project deliverables outlined in the PFX Plan of Work. The primary function of the PFX Coordination Assistant will be to assist with (1) science education/communication product development, layout and design, (2) the logistical planning and note taking for field trips, meetings, and webinars, (3) the dissemination and organization of program evaluation information and (4) maintenance of the Pacific Fire Exchange website and electronic communications. The PFX Coordination Assistant will be expected to participate in monthly PFX Steering Committee and Joint Fire Science Program conference calls as well as the annual Joint Fire Science Program’s “All Exchange Meeting” which brings together the nation-wide network of Fire Science Exchange coordinators. There will also be opportunities to represent the PFX and participate in regional meetings and conferences.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) from a four-year college or university, with the major area of study in the environmental sciences or related fields, marketing and communication, or public outreach and education; two years of related experience, with an emphasis on working with local communities, government agencies, and other partners with measurable results; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Excellent writing and communication skills. Ability to speak effectively before groups of constituents and/or partners of the organization. Ability to write reports and correspondence.
• Ability to organize, layout, and clearly present information for the development of fact sheets, newsletters, etc.
• Familiarity with internet communication and survey tools including social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter), Mail Chimp, and survey monkey or Google Forms
• Familiarity with Square Space for website management preferred
• Ability to organize and plan meetings and field trips
• Ability to develop spreadsheets for data management
• Ability to effectively prioritize and execute a large number of activities with minimal supervision
• Familiarity with wildfire education, suppression, management, or mitigation preferred but not required.
• Familiarity with community and land management issues in Hawaii and/or the US-Affiliated Pacific Islands
• Ability to represent PFX and HWMO professionally and effectively with partners across the state including community members, government agencies, and decision makers
• Physical demands include sitting for at least two hours at a time; standing for at least one hour at a time; walking for up to 30 minutes at a time; occasional stooping and kneeling; talking and understanding what others are saying for 1-3 hours at a time
• Physical capacity and availability to participate in site visits to island-wide and statewide fire prone landscapes and communities, as well as public and private meeting locations.
• Available to travel for 1-2 days at a time to neighbor islands as needed, up to 8 times over duration of hired term.
