Job Title: Farm Assistant
Position: Regular part time position in Central Maui; minimum two days or 16hr/wk.
The position is for one year. Continuation is dependent on program needs, satisfactory work performance and availability of funds.
Salary: $13-$14/hr dependent on experience
Effective date: May 2018
General Summary: E kupaku ka aina is seeking a qualified part-time candidate to support the Project Supervisor in management of Mākaʻaka Lo'i in Waiheʻe, an indigenous crop biodiversity conservation and education site located on the Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes and Wetland Refuge. Primary duties include invasive species, weed and pest management, maintenance and monitoring of auwai and irrigation systems and the full range of work related to restoring and maintaining lo’i kalo, kalo varieties, habitat restoration and other duties.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: HS diploma or GED plus 2-4 years progressive experience in conservation, habitat restoration, agriculture, landscaping or related field.
Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to work 6-8hrs in rugged terrain, mud, hot and rainy weather, lift 50-80lbs, operate and maintain hand and power tools and handle pest control agents. Able to identify native and non-native species on farm, conduct weed and pest control. Ability to work independently, excellent communication skills, open to learning and flexible in assignments and work schedule, including occasional weekends. Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license and working cell phone.
Desirable Qualifications: BS/BA from an accredited college plus 2-4 years progressive experience in habitat restoration, agriculture, conservation biology, landscaping or related field. At least two years of regular experience in wetland and/or dryland taro production and weed management. Keen observation skills. Knowledge and experience designing, building and maintaining irrigation systems. Working knowledge of traditional Hawaiian cultural practices related to agriculture, hunting, fishing and the natural environment . Understanding of invasive species threats to native ecosystem health. Interest in Hawaiian crop biodiversity conservation, especially kalo. Enjoy working in the mud.
