YOUR INTERNSHIP WITH TNC 
The Nature Conservancy’s GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) summer internship program hires undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent college graduates (2017, 2018, and 2019) to fill paid internship positions during a 10-week summer internship. These positions are available throughout the United States and provide a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academics and real-world conservation work. The program recruits individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences who are interested in contributing to our conservation goals in various fields. We offer a structured orientation, professional training, network opportunities, mentoring program, and real work experience.

The primary duties of the Applied Science Conservation GLOBE internship will be focused on the eradication of invasive species to further the scientific objectives of two conservation science projects currently taking place at Palmyra Atoll. 

Concurrently, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, a key TNC partner in the management of Palmyra Atoll, has secured funding to initiate a rainforest restoration project across the atoll. As a part of this project, the intern will be responsible for the identifying, mapping, marking and felling of invasive tree species. 

Additionally, the intern will be responsible for monitoring the population of an invasive mosquito species and assisting in laboratory rearing experiments in conjunction with USFWS & TNC staff, under the direction of Verily Life Sciences Laboratories.

• Work with the field station manager to select invasive trees for removal; remove invasive trees

• Maintain a native tree nursery with direction from the supervisor/mentor
• Replant native trees to replace non-native and invasive trees under guidance from the supervisor/mentor
• Monitor mosquitoes throughout TNC’s Palmyra Atoll Preserve as a part of a mosquito eradication project
• Assist the TNC research station staff with maintenance tasks and community responsibilities

• HS Diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in an undergraduate program, graduate program, or a recent graduate (2017, 2018, or 2019) of Biology, Conservation, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Engineering (Civil, Environmental, Sustainability) or related field, or equivalent

• Experience with written and oral communication
• Experience in forestry, restoration and/or resource management 
  
  DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with chainsaws and physical/manual landscape labor/ability to fell trees
• Experience with invasive species removal
• Experience working in remote environment

• TNC summer housing is provided

• This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a 10-week term of June 3 – August 9, 2019 
  
  WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
• Willingness to travel to Palmyra, Atoll and live in a remote environment with limited internet access and no cell phone access for 10 weeks. 
  
  SALARY INFORMATION

$12.50/per hour (undergrads) and $14.50/per hour (graduate and recently graduated level students)
