Control introduced predators (primarily non-native rats, mongooses, and feral cats) via trapping to protect endangered birds and control pests, 75%; monitor endangered birds—Hawaiian Petrel and Hawaiian Goose—for nesting activity and production of young, 20%; data entry and other duties as assigned, 5%. Daily solo hiking/backpacking over rugged, steep volcanic terrain at high elevations (6000-10,000 ft.) in harsh weather conditions and includes 3-4 day backcountry trips.

Compensation amounts:
  • $200 - weekly living allowance
  • $1,300 - one time RT travel allowance

  • Location Description
    This position is based at the Summit District of the park; work is conducted in the surrounding
    subalpine shrubland and cinder desert. The area is remote with limited staff housing and no public transportation. The nearest stores are about 20 miles away.
  • Training Provided
    In-park training opportunities include: trapping techniques, endangered species monitoring
    and surveying, CPR and 1st aid. Helicopter safety training may be available.
  • Educational/Recreational Opportunities
    Educational opportunities are available through park training programs. Recreational
    opportunities include in-park hiking, and various out-of-park activities including beach
    activities, biking, movies, etc.

Housing is not guaranteed but based on availability which varies seasonally.  Park housing consists of apartments; each unit houses two people with private bed/bath and shared kitchen/living space.  A laundry facility is located next door for residents in park housing.  Park housing is in the service area next door to the Resources Management Office.
