2018 FULL POSITION DESCRIPTION

Kupu is a 501c3 nonprofit organization which aims to empower youth to serve their communities through character building, service learning, and environmental stewardship. Kupu aims to train and equip young adults in Hawaiʻi and throughout the Pacific Rim with work skills, life skills, and knowledge to help them become successful as individuals and as part of the greater community. Kupu is staffed by people with a heart to better Hawaiʻi while working as a team with a purpose of doing what is pono and doing what is best for Hawaiʻi and its people. Kupu is a team-focused, vibrant, and synergistic organization whose culture is dynamic and seeks to make a larger impact on Hawaiʻi. Kupu’s Program Goals

• Provide training and education to Hawaiʻi’s youth

• Help to expose youth to conservation issues and develop an environmental mindset

• Assist community development through skillstraining, job and internship placement, and career pathway development

AVAILABILITY:

There are 6 positions on Maui with the National Park Service at Haleakalā. One team leader (must be 21 years of age or older with a clean driver’s abstract) and up to 5 team members.

PROGRAM DATES:

June 11 – August 3, 2018 (8 weeks)

POSITION DUTIES:

Endangered Wildlife Management: The member will assist with the monitoring of endangered native bird species and threat abatement. He/she will acquire basic knowledge and skills in these areas by working alongside professional Park staff. The member must be able and willing to hike daily over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day trips on Maui. The member will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation.

Facilities Management: The member will assist with gathering data on facilities and infrastructure, wastewater and Park engineering and construction activities. He/she will acquire basic knowledge and skills in construction, wastewater management, engineering, and other related areas. He/she must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. The member must be willing to participate in multi-day backpacking trips on Maui. The member will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation.

Interpretation: The member will help staff visitor center(s), answer visitor questions, work at contact stations using tools to help visitors connect with the park resources, and other related duties. He/she must be outgoing, interested and skilled in working with the public and children. He/she must be able to hike over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day backcountry trips on Maui. The member will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation.

Visitor/Resources Protection: The member will learn about all aspects of Haleakalā National Park’s Visitor and Resources Protection program from a law enforcement and emergency operations standpoint. He/she will participate in ride-along’s with law enforcement officers and work with the Park’s Safety Officer to learn about Emergency Medical Services (EMS), search and rescue, traffic control issues, and visitor information and safety. The member will learn how all of these elements combined help to keep our visitors safe and our natural and historical resources protected. He/she must be able to hike over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day trips on Maui. The member will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation.

Team Leader: The Team Leader will participate in and help coordinate work projects for college level team members. He/she should have strong organizational skills and an interest in natural resources stewardship and management and environmental education. The Team Leader will be expected to track member attendance and performance and other related duties as well as maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation. The Team Leader must be willing and able to transport members safely to and from the Park and between out-of-Park work sites using a seven passenger mini- van. He/she must be willing and able to take a Helicopter B-3 aviation safety course. He/she must be able to hike over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day trips on Maui. Applicants must be able to meet driving abstract requirements and must be at least 21 years old by June 10, 2018

Other duties may include those that are assigned by your site manager or supervisor.

• Orientation to the NPS and Haleakalā National Park

• Orientation to park staff and park areas (summit, wilderness, Kīpahulu asappropriate)

• CPR/AED Training

• Park Safety Training

• Ethics & IT Security Training

• On-the-job training in predator control methods & endangered speciesmonitoring

• Other training as needed for position.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Haleakalā National Park extends from sea level to 10,023 feet. The summit area of the park receives anywhere from 40 to 150 inches of rain each year with the coastal area of Kīpahulu receiving over 80 inches. Temperatures at the summit can range between 30 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit at any time of the year. Work will be performed outside and weather can range from hot and sunny, to cold, wet, and windy. Weather changes rapidly, and members need to be prepared for any type of weather at any time of year. This position is predominantly an outdoor position. Members must not be afraid of heights. Position requires a great amount of physical exertion at times and must be able to traverse irregular terrain with up to 30 pounds of gear for distances of 3 miles or more. Backcountry duties include hiking to and from remote camps/base with backpacks up to 40 pounds over 3 -12 miles. Elevational differences in work areas may range up to 3,300 feet per day. Most of the field work is solitary with occasional interaction with other park staff. Office work will involve working in a crowded environment.

Members will be provided with work t-shirts. Raingear and other outerwear will be provided as needed. Members are required to wear closed-toed shoes at all times (including office work).

Members will need to provide transportation to the pick-up site to Haleakalā National Park. Pick up sites will be in Wailuku and Makawao.

• Team Members will receive $400.00* bi-weekly and the Team Leader will receive $800.00* bi-weekly. Both positions will receive a $1,230.69 Education Award- through Kupu’s largest supporter,AmeriCorps

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:

1. Age - Applicants must be at least 17 years old by June 11, 2018 for members, 21 years old by June 10, 2018 for team leader.

2. Diploma – Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or working towards one.

3. Citizenship - Applicants must be one of the following: a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien (due to AmeriCorpsregulations), and provide additional documentation as required

4. Criminal History Check – Applicants are subject to a criminal historycheck.

5. Housing/Transportation - Applicants must have their own personal housing and transportation arrangements on-island.
