CRB Survey Field Leader

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS), located in Oahu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,372/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Directs field operations necessary to implement action plans into appropriate on-the-ground accomplishments. Supervises, trains, and works in the field with a field crew and/or volunteers to monitor, eradicate, or control coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) populations on Oahu. Responsible for scheduling and implementing field work. Plans site control strategies, makes contact with businesses or residents at targeted locations, and leads the crew’s control efforts. Uses hand tools and CRB traps in field control efforts. Keeps precise daily records of all field efforts. Prepares progress reports and submits all data and findings in a timely fashion. Public or residential contact will be required to schedule access and to maintain positive relations with landowners. Ensures strict adherence by entire field crew team to established protocols for preventing the spread of CRB or other invasive species. Follows and adheres to all safety and operational guidelines and ensures crew compliance. Tracks inventory, supplies and equipment needs, and maintains equipment used. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or at least two (2) years (achieved at least forty-eight (48) credit hours) of college level coursework.  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of experience in agriculture or forestry field activities relating to entomology or invasive species control and/or natural resources management. One to two (1-2) years of leadership or supervisory experience. Volunteer and/or internship experiences are acceptable.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Basic knowledge of entomology and the threats that invasive species, such as the CRB, pose to Hawai‘i.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work. Ability and experience working with small, mechanized equipment.  Ability to train others. Basic computer skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to backpack, lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted, and not suffer from acrophobia (fear of heights). Ability to hike and camp in remove areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to five (5) consecutive days. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Botany, Resource Management, and Environmental Studies or a related field. Experience with control of invasive species in Hawai‘i; with pesticides; computer literacy; and specific knowledge of Hawaiian flora and fauna. Ability to use geographic information systems and databases to organize and analyze spatial data.
