Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH), Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center (PACRC), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,372/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Assists the PACRC Director with management of research and outreach activities including: bivalve aquaculture and development projects throughout the state and region; other aquaculture research activities; procurement of aquaculture materials and supplies; microalgae research and production; development of native shellfish species for aquaculture; working in shellfish hatchery and algae production laboratory; development of polyploid bivalves; development of standard operating procedures for activities at the PACRC; applying for permits; trouble shoot logistical and program management issues; design and set up of aquaculture systems; draft peer-review publications and technical reports; assist visiting scientists; and other administrative/technical duties as assigned. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Aquaculture, Biology, Marine Science or related field.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of professional or student work experience in aquaculture. At least one (1) year of progressively responsible aquaculture work experience (including student work experience) in hatcheries and research programs. Experience with flow cytometry and induction of polyploid bivalves.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Extensive knowledge of general Aquaculture or maintenance of marine organisms. Knowledge of flow cytometry methods. Knowledge of laboratory and work place safety including handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Must be able to train and supervise workers with little knowledge of aquaculture.  Must be able to repair basic aquaculture equipment such as pumps and blowers. Must be able to collect and analyze data, review scientific literature, and write technical reports. Must be able to use laboratory equipment such as balances and flow cytometer.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.   PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to work on a boat and collect data/manage field experiments under challenging physical conditions. Must be willing and able to perform physical labor under humid and hot conditions. Must be able to lift and carry up to thirty (30) pounds. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience with safety handling chemicals in a laboratory setting and use of a flow cytometer.
