Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Center for Conservation Research and Training (CCRT), located in Maui, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,372/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Independently performs a wide variety of complex and specialized technical functions for the Maui Na Ala Hele program such as the construction and maintenance of trails, roads, fences, water units, hiker checking stations and storage facilities; as well as collecting, cleaning, planting seeds and cuttings for nursery propagation in a manner consistent with the DOFAW statewide Na Ala Hele program.  Coordinates and manages a viable volunteer program.  Coordinates logistics for field operations and supervises other lower-level field crew and interns. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of manual labor or semi-skilled work experience, which includes at least six (6) months of natural resource management activities. Experience in use of pesticides and power tools.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of Hawaiian native plants and threats from alien species to native ecosystems. Knowledge of invasive species removal. Knowledge of applicable rules and regulations and policies.  Knowledge of basic trail construction and the use and operation of a mini-skid steer and other small mechanized hand tools.  Highly knowledgeable in monitoring and data collection. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to identify common native and introduced plants.   Ability to work with small-mechanized equipment in a safe manner (chain saws, weed whackers, Pulaskis, hazel hoes, etc.).  Ability to calculate herbicide formulations and follow label instructions of herbicides used in controlling incipient weeds.  Demonstrates ability to plan detailed jobs and make necessary preparations to accomplish work assignments.  Able to effectively communicate and supervise field crew.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months of from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able and willing to physically perform, efficiently and effectively under strenuous outdoor conditions (e.g. extreme weather, mosquitoes, steep terrain, etc.).  Must be able to hike one to ten (1-10) miles on a daily basis.  Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted over uneven terrain. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in the fields of Forestry, Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.  Computer literate and familiar with data analysis and presentation.  Willing to undergo training in various specialty areas such as helicopter safety, and wildland firefighting.  Previous field experience in an active resource or management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere.
