Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,372/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Assists with necropsies of marine turtles and provides care and feeding of injured, stranded, and captive marine turtles for research. Assists with marine turtle stranding calls and response. Assists with field research on the basic biology and ecology of marine turtles including collection of tissue samples, morphometrics, and deploying animal-borne instruments, throughout the Pacific Islands Region (PIR). Assists with laboratory studies using age and growth (skeletochronology), molecular (e.g., hormone assays), stable isotope, and energetic (bomb-calorimetry and proximate composition) analyses of marine turtle samples. Collects and catalogs scientific samples. Performs data entry, data validation, and data query/pull from oracle and access databases. Assists with database management, data collection, analysis, and writing of peer-reviewed publications. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences, Marine Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Oceanography or Animal Science.  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience collecting samples from wildlife, specifically marine organisms (live and dead). Experience restraining marine organisms for sampling in laboratory and/or field settings. Experience capturing wildlife in the field including on small boats. Experience in laboratory settings including proper handling of samples, preparation of samples, and cataloging samples in a database. Experience maintaining databases, including entering and validating data. Experience with basic software including Microsoft Office, ADOBE, and general analysis software (e.g., SAS, JMP, R, Excel analyses).  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of marine turtle biology and ecology. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database programs. Must be able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location.  Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien.  Ability to swim and snorkel. Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools (word processors, spreadsheets, presentation software). Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills to contribute to scientific publications, and to make presentations that are suitable for a range of audiences. Must possess strong interpersonal skills to work with researchers, resource managers, and administrators.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer Employment Requirement: Must be able to meet and maintain US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to obtain and maintain boat operator certification within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout period duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to lift and carry up to seventy-five (75) pounds assisted, work long strenuous hours on remote atolls in high heat or direct sun, and maintain snorkeling/swim tests for NOAA in-water requirements. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations, and maintain throughout duration of employment.  POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Stranding response training and necropsy of marine turtles. Experience with Federal and State-protected species permitting. Working knowledge of Freezerworks sample database, Access database, or other database software. Knowledge of coding language (e.g., R). Experience deploying animal-borne electronic devices.
