NEPM OAHU BOTANIST – ID# 16283. 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Native Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) Program, located on the island of Oahu.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,705-$4,801/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Provides skilled professional and specialized services on matters pertinent to the identification, protection, and enhancement of Oahu’s native plant species and ecosystems, with emphasis on rare, threatened, and endangered species and unique ecosystems to the various sections of Oahu District and the Watershed Partnerships (KMWP and WMWP) on Oahu.  Plans, coordinates, directs, and conducts botanical field surveys.  Develops, reviews, and coordinates plans for the protection and enhancement of rare, threatened and endangered native plant species. Plans, coordinates, directs, and participates in the collection of seed and plant material, propagation, and outplanting for purpose of native species reintroduction and enhancement.  Reviews and provides comments and recommendations on permit requests and other land use matters relative to native species concerns.  Provides specialized botanical assistance and technical advice pertinent to rare, threatened, and endangered native plants. Responsible for collecting and processing biological and geospatial field data related to native plant management.  Produces reports of work conducted.  Coordinates and leads interns and volunteers on service trips.  Interacts with public to disseminate information about conservation issues in Hawaii. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Botany, or a closely related field which included courses in General Botany and Plant Morphology, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Physiology, and Plant Ecology.  (Bachelor’s Degree in non-related field with one to three (1-3) years of experience managing natural resources in Hawaii may substitute).  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of progressively responsible work experience in the field of Botany.    (A Master’s Degree in Botany may substitute for one year of experience and a Ph.D. in Botany may substitute two years of experience.)  Experience must be well documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, and private company or non-profit organization in the appropriate field.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of botanical scientific analysis and of the following specific areas of Botany: Plant Anatomy, Plant Morphology, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Physiology, and Plant Pathology.  Knowledge of field survey and sampling techniques and report presentation.  Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora, threats to Hawaiian plant species and habitats, data collection and management, plant propagation, restoration, and weed control techniques.    Working knowledge of Microsoft (Word, Excel). Good oral and writing skills and able to write clear and concise narrative reports, correspondence, contracts, etc.  Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and use a map and a compass to navigate in dense forests.  Ability to use GPS and GIS for analyzing geospatial data.  Demonstrated ability to lead volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection.  Ability to identify native Hawaiian and alien weed plants.  Ability to work with small mechanized equipment in a safe manner.   Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions:   Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to hike, camp, and work in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days.  Must be able to lift up to forty-five (45) pounds unassisted.  Must be able to hike five (5) miles per day on uneven terrain.  Must not be acrophobic. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Ability to use keys to identify to species.   Field experience working in Hawaii conducting active resource management to protect ecosystems.  Knowledge of and competency using Microsoft Access databases and PowerPoint. Completion of helicopter, First Aid/CPR, and chainsaw training.
