The Pacific Southwest Research Station of the USDA Forest Service is filling a permanent position to serve as the Program Assistant to the Director of the Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry (IPIF).  The IPIF Director is located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. The duty station is Hilo, Hawai‘i.  The position offers an exciting career opportunity for an individual to participate in the high-profile IPIF Research Program.

Duties of the PositionDepending upon grade level, duties and responsibilities may involve, but are not limited to, the following:

The incumbent will serve as a Program Assistant to the Director of Pacific Islands Forestry, Pacific Southwest Research Station.  Some of the responsibilities will be travel arrangement, calendar management, tracking replies-due, filing and records management tasks, monitoring Director’s budget plan for the Institute in coordination with PSW’s Financial Tracking personnel, staff coordination, performance plans, scheduling meetings and taking notes, and preparation and tracking of conference packages.  May serve on special committees or special assignments, and perform other duties as assigned. 

The incumbent will serve as the initial point of contact for all questions, information and problem resolution in the areas of volunteers, agreements, travel, files management, correspondence preparation and control, office automation systems, and supplies.  This is a full-time position with the possibility of flexible hours.  

The incumbent communicates effectively with individuals and among associated institutions (all PSW locations, Region 5, state offices, partners in Hawai‘i and the Western Pacific Islands, local interest groups, community groups, and schools) in all aspects of administrative needs.  Communicates and coordinates with groups interested in using the site for various scientific and educational activities, with the intention of growing the site’s function in the community.

The Institute addresses information needs to support the management, conservation, and restoration of natural forest and wetland ecosystems and landscapes throughout the Pacific. The Institute's area of responsibility includes seven U.S.-affiliated political entities in the Pacific: the State of Hawai'i, the Territory of Guam, the Territory of American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau.

The focus of research and technological assistance centers on Hawai‘i and other islands of the Pacific, but results are applicable to many tropical and temperate ecosystems of the world, including the U.S. mainland.
