PCSU COMMUNITY COCONUT PROGRAM ASSISTANT – ID# 224481.

Regular, Part-Time to Full-Time (50-100% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Urban Forestry Project, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,788/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Assists the Community Coconut Program Specialist with training community members via workshops that integrate tech transfer and place-based, Indigenous knowledge on how to: map, monitor, document (e.g., health, status of CRB, habitat type), and manage diverse varieties of coconut trees.  Assists with documenting existing coconut diversity to inform farmers and community members about planting the right coconut tree in the right place. Participates and assists in information exchange across Pacific Islands. Assists with the coordination of hands-on events to enhance urban wood utilization. Provides logistical support at meetings where accomplishments are shared with project sponsors, advisory council, and the public. Collaborates with partners to further project’s initiatives and goals. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Botanical, Biological, Environmental Science, or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years of work experience in urban and community forestry projects, or similar, may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.)

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years working in natural resource project or environmental education.

KNOWLEDGE

Competence in Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint. Awareness of common tree species (e.g., native, Polynesian-introduced, non-native, invasive) planting, and their occurrence in urban Hawai‘i or similar areas. Understanding of biocultural approaches.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Excellent organizational and communication skills (written, oral, and interpersonal), as well as strong problem-solving skills. Ability to contribute to urban and community forestry outreach and education. Ability to support volunteers. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike up to five (5) miles to plant and maintain trees in urban and community spaces, such as parks, schools, gardens, farms, and community forests.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Experience working with underserved and at-risk populations. Exposure to coconut-centric community outreach and engagement projects in Hawaiʻi. Working knowledge of community agroforestry systems. Experience in event planning. Experience working in nurseries.
