HAWAIIAN FOREST BIRD OUTREACH/EDUCATION ASSOCIATE – ID# 224434.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP), and Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), located in Olinda, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,376/Mon.
DUTIES: Initiates, develops, and implements environmental education programs, which includes student education programs, community stewardship events, classroom and field-based teacher education program, media outreach program, virtual webinars and online education tools, and community outreach events. Work is specifically directed toward conservation, management, and recovery of Hawaiian forest birds. Programs may take place in the field, demonstrating and participating in natural resource management activities, including reforestation, weed control, native plant surveys, and native bird surveys. Fieldwork requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road (4-wheel drive), and work in and around helicopters. Ensures that all reporting and record keeping on events are maintained. Assists with field operations related to Hawaiian forest bird recovery (including avian surveys and monitoring, predator control, and new field projects that develop). Helps coordinate educational field trips for volunteers, community groups, and community leaders. Oversees interns and volunteers. Creates, schedules, and leads presentations. Designs and produces displays, flyers, handouts, brochures, and related materials for use in community outreach efforts. Analyzes effectiveness of outreach and education events, provides updates, and writes reports. Assists with purchasing for outreach and education needs. Designs and develops curriculum for use in student and teacher education programs. Actively works to bring Hawaiian cultural perspectives and protocol into MFBRP products and procedures. Organizes and monitors program supplies and equipment. Uses social media and analyzes statistics for conservation communications to reach key target audiences. Identifies and applies for continued grant funding for outreach and education program. Must be able to work nights and weekends and travel inter-island regularly.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION |
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in terrestrial Biology, Education, Hawaiian Studies, or related field. |
EXPERIENCE |
One to three (1-3) years of experience in conservation or natural resource outreach and education, conducting terrestrial biological fieldwork, public speaking, marketing development. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Working knowledge of natural resources processes and cultural history in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of current community natural resource and cultural issues. Working knowledge of issues related to restoration ecology, predator control, ungulate management, and endangered bird recovery. Knowledge of the threats of native forest birds, especially in Hawai‘i. Considerable knowledge of word processing and desktop publishing software including Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Excel PowerPoint, and Word) and Adobe graphic design programs (i.e., InDesign and Photoshop). |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Good planning, public relations, and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and implement a wide variety of outreach activities, including written, oral, online, and interactive communications, message development, and education and public awareness events. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to lead and train others, including community groups and volunteers. Ability to learn and communicate scientific knowledge to the lay public. Ability to undertake analysis and write reports. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4- wheel drive vehicle. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety (A100) course within six (6) months from date of hire. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able to carry at least forty (40) pounds assisted. Must be able to backpack, camp overnight, and work on steep terrain. Must be able to hike long distances (greater than one (1) mile) over rugged terrain in sometimes rainy, cold, and muddy conditions. |
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledgeable of Hawaiian language and culture. Skilled in native plant and animal identification. Experience conducting avian fieldwork. Experience working with native Hawaiian flora and fauna, especially Hawaiian forest birds, and familiarity with local conservation issues. |
