Title: Fire Science Exchange Program Coordinator

Compensation: $30-$34 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)

Full-time
● 40 hours per week
● Work setup includes 60-70% virtual (work from home) and 30-40% in-person events and activities
● Must be available for pre-scheduled work events on weekends and evenings
● Frequent inter-island travel and occasional continental travel

Overview
The Fire Science Exchange Program Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration among fire science professionals, researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders. This role requires a strong background in fire science and/or science translation/education, excellent organizational and written skills, and the ability to foster meaningful partnerships among the academic research community and on-the-ground fire and land management practitioners.
About Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization
Founded in 2000, HWMO is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving as the state’s primary hub of wildfire information, resources, programming, and technical assistance. With a vision toward wildfire-ready and wildfire-prepared people and places, we support programs and partnerships that are proactive, collaborative in nature, and based off of the best available science. Our current initiatives encompass a wide array of activities, including public education and outreach, landscape-scale risk-reduction collaboratives and projects, community empowerment through our Firewise Communities Program & Network, risk assessment and planning, and policy engagement. We collaborate closely with fire and forestry agencies and community partners to achieve our mission.
Responsibilities
Program Development:
● Develop and implement strategies to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing among academic research professionals and stakeholders toward the betterment of wildfire-related practices and management outcomes.
● Identify emerging trends, research findings, and best practices related to wildfire science, mitigation, and policy, and disseminate information to relevant audiences.
Event Planning and Coordination:
● Organize workshops, conferences, webinars, and other events focused on wildfire-related science, research, management, and policy.
● Coordinate logistics, including venue selection, agenda development, speaker recruitment, and participant registration.
● Collaborate with partner organizations and sponsors to secure funding and support for program activities.
Content Management:
● Curate and maintain a repository of fire science resources, publications, datasets, and tools for use by researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.
● Develop educational materials, fact sheets, and technical reports on wildfire-related ecology, mitigation, management, economics, and policy.
● Manage online platforms, websites, and social media channels to facilitate information sharing and networking within and among fire, land management, and academic research communities.
Stakeholder Engagement:
● Cultivate relationships with academic institutions, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and industry partners involved in wildfire-related research and management.
● Facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange through working groups, forums, and advisory committees.
● Serve as a liaison between research institutions, land managers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment of research priorities and management needs.
Evaluation and Reporting:
● Monitor program activities, track metrics, and evaluate the impact of knowledge exchange efforts.
● Prepare regular reports, summaries, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in fire science, environmental science, forestry, social sciences, science education, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
● Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the fields of fire science research, extension, outreach, natural resources, or education.
● Strong organizational skills; ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines is required.
● Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and foster collaboration.
● Demonstrated experience in event planning, project management, and stakeholder engagement.
● Proficiency in data management, content development, and information dissemination.
● Familiarity with relevant software applications, database systems, and online platforms for knowledge sharing.
● Ability to work independently and as a team, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
● Excellent computer skills and experience with Google programs is required; experience with Wordpress is a strong preference.
● Willingness to travel occasionally and work flexible hours as needed.

The Fire Science Exchange Program Coordinator will contribute to building a more resilient and informed fire management community through effective communication, collaboration, and knowledge transfer.
