Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Social Sciences, Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Primary work location will be at the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) office in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,333.33/Mon.
DUTIES: Researches and evaluates new strategies and methodologies to identify fishery spatial patterns, compare trends, provide a baseline, and inform future monitoring requirements. Facilitates scientific review of fishery data. Evaluates options and recommends measures to understand Hawai‘i’s aquatic resources and support management decisions. Attends related meetings. Tracks and analyzes data. Conducts basic descriptive statistical analysis using software such as Microsoft Power BI, Power Apps, and CoralNet. Drafts reports and correspondences. Performs field work utilizing SCUBA and snorkel. Drives to access work and field sites. Build presentation materials showcasing data analysis (e.g., PowerPoint, GIS StoryMaps). Trailers, launches, recovers, and operates small vessels in near coastal and inshore Hawaiian waters. Work must be completed in compliance with safety protocols and procedures.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION |
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in biology, biological oceanography, aquaculture, natural resource management, zoology or related field with at least two (2) years of coursework in biological oceanography, marine ecology, aquaculture, or other advanced courses relevant to aquatic resources. |
EXPERIENCE |
Two to four (2-4) years of monitoring experience in scientific research diving and computer data entry. Monitoring experience should include designing, implementing and analyzing data from the project. Experience must include using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). One to three (1-3) years of experience operating and maintaining small powerboats. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Familiarity with current fisheries issues, methods, science, and trends. Knowledge of Hawaiian reef fish and invertebrates. Familiarity with commonly used underwater scientific survey techniques, such as fish transects, timed fish surveys, photo quadrat collection, collection of imagery for photogrammetric 3D modeling, and other established survey methodologies. Must have knowledge of commonly used underwater scientific survey techniques such as digital transecting, photoquadrat collection, rugosity measurement, sediment collection, and other established survey methodologies. Must be able to identify Hawaiian reef fish, corals, algae, and invertebrates in the field. Basic knowledge of biological principles, Hawaiian marine ecology, and research design is also required. |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Ability to speak and write clearly, including the ability to analyze and clearly explain data, draft proposals, and draft reports requiring minimal review and editing. Must be able to prioritize work to meet/set deadlines and produce written documents in a timely fashion. Ability to synthesize information from diverse sources, research and compile data, and design or improve related processes. Ability to write effectively and informatively, tailor messages to different audiences, and support reasoning with sound explanations. Must be SCUBA certified (NAUI, PADI, etc.) and meet the standards established by DAR’s diver certification process (which meets the standards set by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration) and hold the current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration, and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able to qualify as a DAR Scientific Diver and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to swim and snorkel to survey aquatic flora and fauna. Must be capable of handling all necessary diving equipment and procedures required in conducting underwater research from shore or small boats, sometimes in rough seas. Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Comfortable working outdoors, around seawater, and in contact with marine organisms. |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in marine biology. Understanding of the resource management landscape of Hawai‘i. Experience working with multicultural stakeholders. |
