EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Resource Management, Conservation, Environmental Science, Biological Sciences, or a related field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in related field and an additional two (2) years of work or field experience in management of Hawaiian watersheds, flora, or fauna, may substitute for a Bachelor’s degree).

EXPERIENCE

Two-four (2-4) years of work experience with biological resources, conservation planning, or natural resource management in Hawai‘i. Experience must be well documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, non-profit organization in the appropriate field.  Experience includes least one (1) year of supervisory experience.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong knowledge of herbicide use and weed control techniques.  Strong working knowledge of expertise in vegetation, rare plant, or stream monitoring techniques and data collection.  Knowledge of methodology for transect monitoring, photo points, ground and aerial scouts/surveys, data collection, and database use.  Must possess strong knowledge of Hawaiian flora and fauna and ecological restoration processes.  Strong knowledge of safe and efficient helicopter operations practices.  Strong working knowledge of ungulate fencing techniques as well as ungulate control methods. Knowledge of management principles including, but not limited to, supervising/developing employees, EEO, workplace safety, corrective/disciplinary actions, and administration of policies and procedures.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to supervise and coordinate personnel.  Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise field operations under highly variable and regularly changing conditions.  Ability to clearly communicate goals and objectives to staff and communicate appropriately with the public. Excellent time-management skills.  Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.  Proficient in the use of word-processing and spreadsheet programs to produce documents and reports. Proficient in identifying common and rare native Hawaiian and alien plants.  Ability to read and navigate with topographic maps, state Tax Map Keys (TMKs), and aerial photographs.  Ability to use altimeter, compass, and maps.  Demonstrated ability to navigate in remote areas with and without a GPS unit.  Ability to safely operate a variety of power tools including chainsaws, weed-whackers, generators, and chippers.  Proficient use of ArcGIS for data entry, analysis, and map preparation.  Ability to accurately collect and store data for target weed and ungulate species survey and control activities, as well as watershed and water quality monitoring. Ability to establish work standards/expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for direct reports.  Ability to provide guidance, motivate, and engage direct reports through effective communication and leadership.  Ability to assign work and to establish work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work.  Ability to review work and evaluate performance, and develop required job competencies of direct reports. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a criminal background check.  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  Must be able to complete helicopter manager courses within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  Must be able to complete rappelling training within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.  Must be able to complete Wilderness First Aid training within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and steep rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to four (4) consecutive days.  Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to forty (40) pounds.  Ability to work in an office environment.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

Knowledge of island ecosystem processes, incipient alien plant invasions, and animal invasions.  Experience conducting biological surveys and weed control efforts within the Ko‛olau Mountains.  Previous experience monitoring and mapping vegetation and stream resources in the Ko‛olau Mountains or similar environments. Familiarity with watersheds in Hawai`i.  Expertise with database (MS Access) and GIS (Arcview) and GPS (Garmin) systems.  Previous fence building experience in remote environments.
