Regular, Part-Time to Full-Time (50-100% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Urban Forestry Project, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
HOURLY RATE: Commensurate with qualifications.
DUTIES: Promotes urban and community forestry programs and efforts through educating and presenting to the public. Schedules and coordinates educational briefings to promote Kaulunani community grant projects and programs. Compiles and presents information on projects to other organizations and programs with similar urban and community forestry goals in order to build collaborations and networks. Develops, contributes to, and maintains social media accounts, website, newsletter, and other digital assets. Drives to project work sites. Maintains Project’s database of contacts, and updates and shares contacts with DOFAW on a semi-annual basis. Keeps accurate and detailed records. Curates photos from community forestry. Tracks, monitors, and reports on new and existing partnerships. Develops communications’ strategy into outreach for school groups, community members, and specialized groups. Develops and produces information products such as newsletter for target groups.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION |
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university. (At least two (2) years of college coursework and at least two (2) years of urban and community forestry or similar experience may substitute for an Bachelor’s Degree.). |
EXPERIENCE |
One to three (1-3) years of experience working in urban and community forestry, environmental education, or similar field, and developing and implementing outreach and communication strategies. Experience conceiving and writing marketing and communications materials for various audiences. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Knowledge of Graphic Arts/Design Principles. Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Canva, Microsoft Office suite, and Google suite. Knowledge of common social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, etc.). Knowledge of photo and video editing software as well as knowledge of how to shoot photos and videos. Knowledge of natural resources management, conservation, and public education. |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Ability to translate technical information for lay audiences. Ability to manage social media accounts for a program professionally and effectively. Good oral and written communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Google suite. Ability to initiate, plan, coordinate, and implement urban and community forestry outreach and education, both digitally and in-person. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, advisory council, and the public. Ability to write, convey, and articulate ideas in a compelling manner. Ability to complete assignments on a timely basis. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai`i’s No- Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able to carry at least ten (10) pounds of boxes of printed materials and a presentation table unassisted. |
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Familiarity with DOFAW and USDA Forest Service Programs, policies, and protocols. Specialized experience in working with non-profit and civic organizations involved in urban and community forestry. Experience working on urban and community forestry projects in Hawai‘i. Experience in event planning. Experience with project management. Experience working in underserved communities and grounding work in a lens of equity and justice. Experience and competency working in multi-cultural and/or cross-cultural settings. Knowledge and experience with Hawaiian and local culture. |
