Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Ko‘olau Mountains Watershed Partnership (KMWP), located in Pearl City, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,569/Mon.
DUTIES: Develops and leads KMWP Outreach programs. Leads public education and outreach efforts. Works with KMWP Program Manager and Planner to develop strategies for raising public awareness of natural resources management issues on Oahu. Oversees the development of content and curriculum for classroom presentations on natural resource management and watershed protection programs. Conducts school and private group outreach talks and workshops, develops cultural and biological talking points for public events, develops displays and outreach materials, organizes and leads public and private volunteer trips, and encourages favorable public relations of KMWP natural resource objectives. Serves as main public point of contact for watershed issues and works closely with the media, other agencies, organizations, private foundations, and the general public to engender widespread support for watershed initiatives. Interacts with KMWP landowners, media, community organizations, volunteers, civic leaders, and local cultural and community groups. Assists KMWP Program Manager to identify and obtain financial support for projects. Prepares reports, publications, press releases, and other public outreach documents. Obtains information on plants and land access and ensures information is filed in the project records/database. Performs other duties as assigned, including office management support as requested by KMWP Program Manager.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION |
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university. |
EXPERIENCE |
Two to four (2-4) years of experience in an active research, public outreach, or resource management program (e.g., public relations, education, general administrative, inter-agency coordination, community outreach, cultural education, or other related experience) aimed at protection of Hawai‘i’s ecosystems or culture. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Knowledge of media relations including preparation of media campaigns and press releases for print and electronic media. Knowledge of common social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter). Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of basic methods to document a natural resource-related project. Knowledge of Hawaiian tradition and cultural practices. |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Proficient in word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet computer applications, internet use, preparing social media posts for education or outreach, and aptitude to learn ARCView GIS software applications. Ability to work on weekends, volunteer, attend public events, and camp overnight occasionally. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must be able to complete basic First Aid/CPR training within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able to hike in steep and rough terrain with a twenty (20) pound backpack and conduct restoration work. |
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT |
As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Familiar with biological principles and resources pertaining to Hawaiian ecosystems and alien/invasive species. Knowledge and experience with PCSU and/or RCUH policies and procedures. Experience working in an office to support and promote biological field activities. |
