EDUCATION

Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years of college coursework in Natural Resources Management or a related field may substitute for an Associate's Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

At least three (3) years of experience in work related to fence building, feral animal and alien plant control research or agriculture with a land management agency or company, including at least one (1) year of supervising experience. Experience must be well-documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, non-profit organization in the appropriate field and can include internships.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Strong working knowledge of principles of ecology and conservation in Hawai‘i. Strong working knowledge of field work techniques, logistical planning, data collection or management, and ecosystem monitoring protocols. Knowledge of watershed and island ecosystem processes, incipient alien plant, and animal invasions. Proficient with GPS. Knowledge of the safe use of airguns. Working knowledge of computers, including word processing, and spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel), and mapping software (ArcMap or similar software).  Knowledge of management principles including, but not limited to, supervising/developing employees, EEO, workplace safety, corrective/disciplinary actions, and administration of policies and procedures.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to operate power tools including chain saws, weed eaters, generators, chipper, etc.  Ability to coordinate work trips and outdoor activities safely over challenging terrain. Ability to apply herbicides safely and effectively. Ability to adhere to strict alien species prevention protocol. Precise navigational and field mapping capabilities, which are essential in accomplishing and documenting tasks in a reliable manner. Ability to communicate orally and in writing, and to disseminate and comprehend complex verbal and written instructions.  Ability to establish work standards/expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for direct reports.  Ability to provide guidance, motivate, and engage direct reports through effective communication and leadership.  Ability to assign work and to establish work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work.  Ability to review work and evaluate performance, and develop required job competencies of direct reports.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Ability to operate all-terrain vehicles. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass a criminal background check for use of airguns. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety (A100) course within twelve (12) months from date of hire and become certified as a PCSU Helicopter Manager when training is offered. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days.  Able to backpack and lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Fieldwork may involve elevation changes up to 4,500 feet in a day.  Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights).

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

Ability to use herbicides to control weedy vegetation in a forest environment.  Knowledge of east Maui’s watersheds or ecosystem processes. Knowledge and understanding of Hawaiian natural history, Hawaiian culture (including ethnobotany) and Hawaiian endangered species.
