Regular, Part-Time (75% FTE), Limited-Term (not to exceed a duration of eleven (11) months), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Three Mountain Alliance (TMA), 'Imi Pono no ka 'Āina Environmental Education Program at the ʻImi Pono no ka ʻĀina office at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH). Telework (from employee’s residence city and state) may be permissible subject to review and approval by Principal Investigator and RCUH. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $2,850/Mon. (@ 75% FTE)
DUTIES: Lead coordinator for the Three Mountain Alliance (TMA) Student Enrichment Program (“Kahuapono”). Plans, develops, and implements student environmental education program, which includes field-based Summer, Spring, and Fall Enrichment programs, and supplemental activities throughout the year for returnee students both in and out of the field. All events place an emphasis on watershed management and protection; Hawaiian culture and practice; geology; history; and the preservation of Hawai‘i’s native diversity. Programs often take place in the field, demonstrating and participating in natural resource management activities including reforestation, weed control, native plant surveys, native bird surveys, and trail building. Field-based activities involve hiking over moderately rugged terrain, carrying heavy packs and equipment, and potentially working in inclement weather. Field and non-field based activities are developed and implemented by integrating multiple knowledge frameworks including the Hawaiian worldview and established scientific principles. Promotes and recruits for program participants via community events, classroom presentations, and social media. Ensures that all reporting and record keeping related to student programs is maintained. Assists with researching and applying for program funding.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION |
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Education, Hawaiian Studies or related field. |

EXPERIENCE |
At least two (2) years of experience working in an environmental education position, including at least one (1) year working in environmental education in Hawai‘i. Experience also includes working with students ages twelve to eighteen (12-18), and working in outdoor education. |

KNOWLEDGE |
Knowledge of natural resources processes and natural and cultural history of Hawai‘i. Considerable knowledge of Microsoft (MS) Office programs (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and Adobe graphic design programs (e.g., InDesign, PhotoShop). Knowledge of environmental education curriculum and philosophies. |

ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to effectively manage groups of students in an outdoor setting. Must be able to design and implement field-based student programs as well as classroom presentations. Must be able to establish rapport with local teachers and schools. Must be able to work independently and cooperatively with a group. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. |

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able to carry at least fifty (50) pounds assisted. Must be able to hike long distances (more than one (1) mile) over rugged terrain in sometimes rainy, cold, and muddy conditions. |

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledgeable of Hawaiian culture, perspective, practice and language. Skilled in native plant and animal identification. Experience leading students in a field based setting. Experience designing environmental education curriculum. Experience working with schools, teachers, and educators on Hawai‘i Island. Experience using social media as a communication platform for environmental education, conservation, or related field. |
