Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), East Maui Watershed Partnership (EMWP), located in Makawao, Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $3,300-3,800/Mon.
DUTIES: Serves as a Field Crew Leader, leading field personnel involved in monitoring the native ecosystem, controlling feral animal populations, building and maintaining fence lines, controlling alien plant invasions using mechanical and chemical means and performing other duties, as assigned. Maps invasive species locations, current and proposed fence lines, and feral animal activity. Records control work and pesticide usage, and assists in public relations activities. Ensures that field operations follow and adhere to appropriate safety and operational policies/guidelines. Must adhere to equipment use, pesticide use, and invasive species prevention protocols. Responsible for the use, maintenance, and inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies. Areas where the majority of work is performed are in remote locations and require transportation via helicopter. All field personnel must be able to backpack up to twelve (12) miles over rough terrain and thick and unmarked trail conditions with loads of up to fifty (50) pounds, and camp out in remote areas and/or under extreme conditions for up to a week at a time. Must not be afraid of heights due to the need to fly by helicopter to remote locations and hike on or near vertical exposures.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in fence building, feral animal and alien plant control, watershed protection research or related agriculture with a land management agency or company. At least one (1) year experience leading a team (experience can be unrelated). ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Able to operate power tools, including chainsaws, weed eaters, generators, chipper, etc. Able to communicate orally and in writing and to comprehend complex verbal and written instructions. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Wilderness First Aid and CPR Certification or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety (A100) course within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete CTAHR Pesticide risk reduction short course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to adhere to strict alien species prevention protocol. Must be able to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days. Fieldwork may involve elevational changes up to 4,500 feet in a day. Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Natural Sciences or relevant college level coursework. Previous fence building or construction experience. Fieldwork with emphasis on feral animal and alien plant control with a land management agency. Familiarity with computers and data entry. Use of herbicides to control weedy vegetation. Familiarity with watersheds in Hawai‘i.
