AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES HATCHERY TECHNICIAN – ID# 222062.

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i, Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) and the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), located at Anuenue Fisheries Research Center (AFRC) on Sand Island, Oahu or other designated worksite.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,920.05/Mon.

DUTIES:  Performs technical work in a marine lab and larval rearing facility.  Conducts production work and research on Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) control organisms with special emphasis on sea urchins.  Performs tasks related to marine hatchery work, including microalgae culture, experimental design, systems design, and fabrication.  Works with the AIS Biocontrol Coordinator, Senior AIS Hatchery Technician, and researchers as needed for the purpose of raising sea urchins as biocontrol organisms.  Assists in data compilation and analysis to monitor project effectiveness.  Works and communicates with partner agencies and individuals, participates in training activities, and works and participates with public during community events.  Participates with the aquatic invasive species team placing sea urchins in the ocean.  Must be available to work weekends.  Willingness to work long and irregular hours and occasionally perform tasks under hazardous conditions, such as climbing ladders and working on uneven and sometimes slippery terrain.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Successful completion of at least two (2) years of college-level coursework at an accredited college or university.  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of aquaculture hatchery or scientific research and computer experience.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of Hawaiian marine life and aquatic invasive species issues.  Knowledge of aquaculture systems.  Basic knowledge of standard aquaculture procedures and techniques.  Basic understanding of invertebrate biology and developmental biology.  Working knowledge of aquatic or marine life support systems and animal husbandry. Ability to maintain life support systems for animal husbandry.  Ability to use computers.  Ability to use data and word processing software.  Ability to use water quality monitoring equipment.  Ability to research, collect, correlate, evaluate, and analyze data.  Must possess communication (oral and written) skills. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.  Must be able to swim and snorkel. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience with sea urchin biology and hatchery production.  Knowledge of invertebrate biology and taxonomy.  Experience with marine phytoplankton culture.
