NR/ER FIELD ASSISTANT (MAUI) – ID# 221525. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), assigned to the State of Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Natural Resources/Ecosystem Restoration (NR/ER) located in Kahului, Maui.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,120/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Assists professional staff with management/monitoring of Natural Area Reserves on Maui and Molokai.  Controls alien plants and feral animals, builds and maintains fences, monitors and maps native and introduced plant species, and performs other duties as assigned.  Performs simple maintenance on tools, vehicles, and facilities.  Operates equipment, such as chainsaws and other small power tools, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), handheld radios, cameras, etc.  Operates 4-wheel drive (4WD) trucks or All-Terrain Vehicles.  Assists with collection of various data in the field and entry of data into computers, preparation of simple maps, and other tasks related to keeping accurate records of fieldwork accomplished.

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (0-1) year of experience in work related to research (feral animal and alien plant control) or agriculture with a land management agency or company.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  General knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Ability to communicate orally and in writing and to comprehend complex verbal and written instructions. Ability to operate power tools, including chain saws, weed eaters, generators, chipper, etc.  Must be able to swim and snorkel. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions:  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire.  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete rappelling training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to hike up to twelve (12) miles daily and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to seven (7) consecutive days.  Able to perform fieldwork involving elevation changes up to 4,500 feet in a day.  Able to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or college coursework in Natural Sciences. Fieldwork experience with emphasis on feral animal and alien plant control with a land management agency. Previous fence building or construction experience. Familiarity with computers and data entry.  Prior use of herbicides to control weedy vegetation in a forest environment.  Hunting experience.
