Save Our Shearwaters: Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician

The Save Our Shearwaters (SOS) program seeks a Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician to aid in its wild bird response and recovery efforts. The Technician will be responsible for helping with the rehabilitation of native Hawaiian birds undergoing care at SOS. While the primary focus of this role is rehabilitation operations, it will flex to assist the Program Coordinator with office-based projects when needed. The position will start as early as November 1st, 2021.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the husbandry of native Hawaiian birds undergoing rehabilitation at SOS
  • Assist the Program Coordinator with office-based projects (data reports, equipment maintenance, grant applications, social media posts, etc)
  • Transport native Hawaiian birds to/from the rehabilitation facility
  • Perform general rehabilitation procedures such as avian gavage and other basic husbandry techniques
  • Regular cleaning of equipment and cages
  • Data entry and proofing
  • Perform public outreach while in the field and at community events

This position pays $17/hr. A typical work week will consist of 5 days/40 hours. Scheduled shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Housing is not provided, and the Technician will be responsible for his/her transportation to and from the facility. Field vehicles will be provided for use during the workday.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology or other related field
  • A solid understanding of wildlife rehabilitation and what it entails (including the more mundane aspects of caring for animals such as cleaning, laundry, more cleaning, and more laundry!)
  • Direct bird handling experience
  • Willingness and ability to seamlessly adapt to change
  • Detail-oriented; experience entering and interpreting data with dependable accuracy
  • Respectful and supportive of others
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow established protocols
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of wildlife rehabilitation experience
  • Waterbird and seabird rehabilitation experience
  • Prior work with endangered species
  • Experience fielding wildlife hotline calls
  • Familiarity with Bandit database and/or maintenance of Federal banding records
  • Experience preparing grant applications
  • Solid experience navigating and using major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram)
