WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT FIELD ASSISTANT (MAUI) – ID# 221032.
Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. (2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), working in support of the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Wildlife Section, located in Kahului, Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $2,946.67/Mon.
DUTIES: Assists technician and biologist in field operations, monitoring Hawaiian Goose movements, and nesting and banding activities. Assists in predator control and habitat management (e.g., building and maintaining fence lines, water units, and open-top release pens). Assists with controlling alien plant invasions using chemical and mechanical means, and restoring native vegetation. Maintains and monitors predator traplines. Keeps accurate and detailed records of daily work. Precise navigational and field mapping capabilities are essential in order to accomplish and document tasks reliably. Operates a Global Positioning System (GPS) and downloads GPS units. Inputs and updates data on sightings, nesting locations, and banding records. Assists with monthly reports on sightings, banding, and trapline data. Assists with maintenance of equipment, field gear, vehicles, and project base yard. Assists with scheduling, planning, logistics for field operations, and public relations activities and events. Contributes to creating and preserving a positive work environment and serves as a valued member of the field team. Work is primarily outdoors and can include remote areas with rugged terrain that must be crossed on foot. Work also takes place in residential areas. Position requires a flexible work schedule including early morning and late night hours, and occasional weekends. Drives project vehicles to work sites. Must ride in helicopters to access certain work sites for field operation.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience in field activities related to natural resources management. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of field activities relating to natural resources management. Knowledge of identification of common native Hawaiian plants and bird species. Knowledge of mechanical and chemical control techniques for all target species. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs, and document work. Ability to work with small, mechanized equipment. Ability to use Microsoft Suite. Ability to use a handheld GPS unit, accurately collect and store data for species surveyed. Ability to appropriately explain project objectives to the public. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i's No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than prior to employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to five (5) consecutive days. Must be able to work in adverse conditions including extreme heat/cold, heavy rainfall, and mosquitoes. Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with animals. Field experience in an active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere, especially in the control of noxious and invasive species. Experience using ArcGIS software. Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions in the field. Ability to identify a wide variety of native and alien plants and animals.
