WILDLIFE SURVEY ASSISTANT – ID# 220257. 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,321-3,736/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Assists the Hawai‘i Island Hawksbill Turtle Recovery Project, based at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.  Assists the Coordinator with hawksbill turtle monitoring and management at nesting beaches and oversees volunteers at the backcountry camps.  Camps two to five (2-5) nights per week with one to two (1-2) volunteers at remote beaches during turtle nesting season (May to January).  Collects, records and enters technical field data in computer. Conducts night observations, tags and measures turtles, locates nests, rescues turtle hatchlings, and controls predators (mongoose, feral cats, rats).  Provides logistical assistance in lodging, transporting, and scheduling of volunteers. Assists in orientating new volunteers in the field.  Conducts outreach and educational activities. Drives volunteers to field sites via paved and unpaved roads.  Must be flexible and be available on weekends and work extended hours. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of experience monitoring or collecting biological data, including monitoring and handling sea turtles (i.e., tagging and measuring sea turtles and collecting field data on nesting turtles).  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of endangered species in Hawai‘i, conservation programs, and resources management experience relating to endangered species. Demonstrated knowledge of monitoring or collecting biological data on hawksbills. Knowledge of Personal Computer (PC) for data entry (database management).  Demonstrated knowledge of hiking and camping in wilderness.  Knowledge of interpretation and outreach related to sea turtle conservation.  Knowledge of safety issues related to remote camping on Hawai‘i.  Ability to interact with large and diverse groups and skilled at public speaking. Ability to trap and necropsy mongooses and feral cats. Good planning, managing, and interpersonal skills along with the ability to communicate verbally. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to hike into rough terrain and camp in wilderness conditions for two to five (2-5) nights.  Ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Zoology, Biology, or related Natural Science.  At least one (1) year of experience monitoring and managing hawksbill turtles on Hawai‘i Island.  At least one (1) year of experience leading volunteer groups in remote areas performing natural resources management.  Experience performing marine turtle outreach to diverse audiences.
