Following our very recent “strengthening leadership” improvement made across the Ministry for Primary Industries, we are pleased to announce a newly created leadership opportunity within the Biosecurity New Zealand branch.  This position will play an integral role in providing quality advice and leading the Centre of Excellence in scientific biosecurity regulatory risk assessment to ensure Biosecurity New Zealand maintains high biosecurity standards and supporting regulatory decisions made across biosecurity.

The Director Biosecurity Science & Risk Assessment plays a key role in:

  • Providing high level advice across the Biosecurity NZ branch with regards to innovation, fit for purpose risk assessments that support the setting of standards and regulatory decision-making
  • Developing faster and more efficient ways of delivering science and risk assessment work
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key groups and people both internally and externally of MPI
  • Providing essential scientific input to international standard-setting organisations and processes in regard to import health standards
  • Oversight and management of the operational research programme for biosecurity and animal welfare
  • Leading and leveraging science activities with external agencies and stakeholders that will impact our biosecurity standards

Key skills and experiences required (but not limited to):

  • Proven leadership abilities and strong interpersonal skills
  • Extensive experience and background in science
  • Post-graduate degree in relevant biological science
  • Experience with change management and driving significant change
  • Experience in gathering, organising and communicating information
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships at all levels both internally and externally in a large organisation
