(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH), Feral Animal Removal and Management (FARM) Program, located at Haleakala National Park (HALE) on the island of Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,200/Mon.
DUTIES: Works directly with the Principal Investigator (PI) to collect data on distribution and abundance of feral animals in HALE. Conducts fence inspections and repairs, and assists in the control and prevention of vertebrate pests (e.g. rodents and feral animals) using various trapping methods. Summarizes data and writes summary reports. Works in the field for extended periods of time in all weather conditions and different terrain. Requires frequent travel to remote locations for extended periods of time (up to five (5) days).
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Biological Sciences, Environmental Studies, or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent plus at least two (2) years of related work experience may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.). EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of experience conducting predator control to protect endangered wildlife, which includes fence repair or maintenance. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of control of ungulates and predators that affect endangered wildlife and flora and fauna in Hawai‘i. General skill in fence repair and using fence maintenance tools. Ability to utilize field equipment, such as machetes, chainsaws, weed whackers, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and field data collection equipment. Ability to utilize computer programs to process, summarize and analyze field data. Ability to enter and retrieve data from Geographic Information System (GIS), GPS and other information management systems. Ability to successfully interact with people from diverse backgrounds. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete helicopter safety training per NPS/U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) requirements within twelve (12) months from date of hire and pass all helicopter safety requirements. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform labor intensive fieldwork to collect data, maintain fences, and control feral animals to protect endangered wildlife in all types of weather conditions and terrains, including uphill and downhill hiking carrying packs weighing up to 50 pounds, with elevation changes of 2,000 to 4,000 feet in two to three (2-3) miles. Requires remote field camping with tents and tarps.
