A Research Assistant position is open to applicants who are excited to conduct daily activities associated with the release of Palila into the wild on Mauna Kea, Hawai‘i Island.
 
The successful applicant will work as part of a team responsible for the post-release monitoring and husbandry of Palila in a rugged and rocky, high elevation, and cold and dry environment.  Primary duties include: caring for birds in aviaries prior to release, radio tracking released individuals, preparing and provisioning supplemental food, monitoring behavior and conditions of birds before and after release, detailed record keeping, and other duties as assigned. Staying overnight at a remote site will be required. The Research Assistant will be based at a remote release site on Mauna Kea, under the direct supervision of the Research Coordinator.
 
Representative qualifications for this position include (but are not limited to): a Bachelor’s degree in the sciences or equivalent vocational experience in conservation; experience working in remote backcountry situations; experience with radio telemetry tracking; experience working with threatened species; experience in any of the trades or practical skills useful in a remote living situation; ability to identify diverse color bands; and 4WD driving experience.

The start date for this position is approximately March 2019. Scheduled hours will be 40 hours/week. This is a temporary position.
