This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year. Work season is generally January through mid-December.

Duties include:

  • Identify, count, and monitor tropical coral species, marine fish species, freshwater fish species, freshwater invertebrate species, and Pacific aquatic/marine plant species by sight on field surveys.
  • Collect chemical water quality field samples
  • Collect physical water quality field data
  • Use various types of software packages including image analysis, photo archive/database, spreadsheet, production, and database programs to manage, store, and produce technical reports and tables and analyze data.
  • Serve as lead technician over field crews
  • Schedule activities of volunteers and plan logistics in both marine and terrestrial environments
  • Work unsupervised in the field in remote locations requiring overnight backcountry or wilderness travel
  • Present scientific information at meetings
  • Participate in dive team activities from shore or boat.
  • Operate motorboats.
