Join the Koʻolau Mountains Watershed Partnership for a conservation workday at our Waihee Valley project site in Kahaluʻu.
Deadline to sign up is February 20th!!
Waiheʻe Valley on the Windward side of Oʻahu is on Honolulu Board of Water Supply (HBWS) land and has been identified by HBWS as a “potentially high recharge watershed”. KMWP has partnered with HBWS to begin clearing a large site area of invasive and non-native trees and shrubs to replace them with native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plants. The goal is to implement a Riparian Learning Center for nearby schools and communities to utilize, learn from, and give service to.
What to Expect:
We will use hand-held cutting tools to manually remove invasive species, as well as spread mulch and outplant native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plants to the site. The work area is mostly forested with some exposed areas and a nearby stream. Please be prepared to get dirty on this trip!
February 23rd Work Plan (tentative):
8:30 – Meet at the top of Waihee Road, collect volunteer waivers
8:45 – Caravan in to Waiheʻe worksite, introductions, site background and moʻolelo
9:00 – Workday and safety briefing, pass out tools and start removing weeds
12:00 – Pau work!
