Every year Martin Luther King Jr. Day is recognized as a national day of service. Join Kupu, Mālama Maunalua and Pono Pacific as we celebrate the legacy of Dr. King by participating in our community workday at Maunalua Bay! We will help restore the marine environment by removing invasive limu (algae) from the nearshore waters.

Join Kupu, Mālama Maunalua and Pono Pacific for community workday at Maunalua Bay! We will help restore the marine environment by removing invasive limu (algae) from the nearshore waters. From 2009-2011 a team of dedicated volunteers and staff removed 3 million pounds of invasive limufrom 26 acres; it became known as the Great Huki. Today, we continue this effort through volunteer community huki or “pulls”.

After check-in, event staff will provide everyone with background about the history of Maunalua, the benefits of restoring the marine ecosystem and limu identification. There will be few educational booths open throughout the workday for everyone to learn more about limu and watersheds. The booths are represented by Pua Heimuli from Koʻolau Mountain Watershed Partnership, Jason Mehlinger from DLNR/Division of Aquatic Resources ʻEwa Limu Project and KUA. After the instructions the group will walk 10 minutes down the shoreline to Paikō Beach where the remainder of the time will be spent removing invasive limu from the restoration area. Everyone will be back to Kuliʻouʻou Beach Park by 12 pm to rinse off and enjoy lunch provided by Kupu.
