Koʻolau Mountains Watershed Partnership
Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 8:30am - 12:30pm
Pali Lookout
Kāwelu (Eragrostis grandis) is a native Hawaiian grass part of the love grass family. According to Oli (chants) and Moʻolelo (stories), Nuʻuanu valley and it’s mountains were known have an abundance of the Kāwelu. KMWP has worked with volunteers since 2014 to take out weeds and planted native plants, including Kāwelu to give residents and visitors alike a glimpse of a healthy native forest with trees, shrubs and an understory of ferns and grasses. By restoring this garden in an accsessible area, we hope to inspire others to support and join in efforts for watershed protection.
What to expect
We will be using small hand tools, including sickles, trowels and spades to remove weeds and plant in the native garden area. If plants are available, we will plant several species of native plants including Kāwelu grass. The work area is steep in some areas, and muddy at times, so please be prepared to get dirty on this trip! All participants must wear closed toed shoes. No Shoes No Work!
