Pouhala Marsh Wetland Restoration

Hawai`i Nature Center is a private, non-profit organization with a mission to provide hands-on environmental education programs to families and children. This includes various outdoor wetland programs in the Pearl Harbor area where volunteers help restore the marsh by removing invasive species and establishing habitat areas for endangered Hawaiian waterbirds.  

Wetland restoration work days will take place at Pouhala Marsh in Waipahu. Pouhala Marsh is located across the street from the Police Training Academy on Waipahu Depot Street.

Please keep in mind…

Volunteers must be at least 16 years or older in order to participate in our work days.

Bring your own work gloves and bottled water. HNC will provide snacks and juice for after the service project.

Wear a hat, use sunscreen, and dress to get dirty and muddy.  It can get very HOT in Waipahu! Footwear (covered shoes or rubber boots) is required. 

Bring a change of clothes, towel, rubber slippers and plastic bag to put your dirty clothes in.

Work may involve going into the water and mud (at least up to your knees) to remove pickleweed, cattail, and mangrove. We may also include outplanting and weed removal.

There are no bathroom facilities and no running water.  However, we will have jugs of water and soap for washing hands and feet after the service project.
