Ka'ena Point (Keawaʻula west section) Coastal Habitat Restoration and Guided Hike

PROJECT: RESTORATION AT KAʻENA POINT STATE PARK– KEAWAʻULA SECTION (WEST)

This out-planting site was cleared and planted by many Waiʻanae intermediate students, with the help of our sister Division of Forestry and Wildlife. The water used from the showers has been redirected by an ʻauwai dug by volunteers, this ditch feeds into the native plants providing a vital resource to the natives planted in this dry section of the park. We will remove invasive plant species at this restoration site in Keawaʻula, as well as extend the ʻauwai.

We may use various tools including trowels, folding saws, loppers, and shovels. Participants will experience the scenic Waiʻanae coast, and learn about Ka'ena’s natural and cultural resources. Activities are subject to change depending on program needs and/or weather.

Time:

800a to 1000a (restoration)

1015a to 200p (optional hike to point)

DIFFICULTY:

Generally flat, sandy, and rocky, may be muddy in places, minimal inclines, and declines.

WHAT TO BRING:

 Shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy, and comfortable protective gardening clothes. Clothes to hike in afterwards for optional hike. Please bring ample sunscreen and water. 

NOTE: There is a restrooms with non-potable water. There is very minimal shade and it can be very hot at Ka'ena. All weeding tools and gloves will be provided.

TYPICAL SCHEDULE (times are approximate):

1. Introduction to Ka`ena Point, a safety briefing (15 min)
2. Discuss native coastal species and restoration goals (15 min)
3. Restoration work (1.5 hours)
4. Break (15 min)
5. Optional Interpretive Hike to Kaʻena Natural Area Reserve (1.5 hours)
6. Tour of NAR, Albatross, sheerwater and Hawaiian monk seal observation (45 min)
7. Hike back to the parking lot (1.25 hour)

***Overall time may vary depending on how the day plays out. You may leave when needed.

Note: Google/ Apple maps may try to guide you to the northshore (Mokuleʻia) entrance to Kaʻena State Park. This volunteer activity is located on the Waiʻanae side of the point. We are at the dead-end of Farrington Highway nearly 6miles north of Makaha Beach.
