Marine Debris Research Assistant - Japanese Translation

Part-time position for 1 year starting in Feb. 2022 $14/hr, 20hrs a week with health insurance through the Kupu `Aina Corps program. The role entails assisting in the research of types and origins of plastic marine debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch that has already been collected from shorelines by B.E.A.C.H. volunteers. In particular this role entails Japanese to English and English to Japanese translation. This is a very important project for B.E.A.C.H. as the data from this research is going to be used to identify solutions as well as inform the development of educational resources for schools and the community including print, online and film. 

Essential duties (in order of importance): 1. Translation of Japanese characters on plastic marine debris into English 2. Researching origins and uses of Japanese marine debris items on the internet from logos, brands. Locate information from website searches and enter into word document and save to Google Drive 3. Entering research data into excel spreadsheets on their own computer (due to Covid-19 every person uses their own computer) and save it to Google Drive 4. Creating and translating English marine debris educational resources into Japanese 5. Sort micro plastic marine debris into types (utilizing various equipment) 6. Assist with review of literature from online sources 7. Assist with writing up research reports.

Required for this position: Fluent in Japanese (reading and writing) and English (speaking, writing, reading). Able to translate written Japanese characters into English and English into Japanese. 

Some experience required in excel spreadsheets if working on entering marine debris data. No experience needed in marine debris sorting and identification - training will be provided on the job. No prior knowledge needed in the field of plastic pollution or development of outreach materials - all training will be provided.

Participants need to have good eye sight and be able to sit and work at a computer or at a table and look at or sort marine debris.  If they require glasses to read, they will need to bring those with them to work.
