Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i Lyon Arboretum, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES:  Leads the exploring and analyzing of diverse data sets generated from two (2) research programs: (1) the ex situ tropical plant conservation focus at Lyon Arboretum and (2) a long-term experimental restoration study in southern Costa Rica. Assists in field research and data collection for the Costa Rican project during field season in southern Costa Rica and on an as needed basis determined by the PI. Assists with laboratory and field-based activities on an as needed basis for the HRPP. Participates in outreach and scientific dissemination activities. The Lyon Arboretum-Hawaiian Rare Plant Program (HRPP) was established over 20 years ago and is an ex situ conservation facility, which utilizes in vitro micropropagation and seed storage to rescue, recover, and store Hawai‘i’s most critically endangered native plant species. The Islas Project was established in southern Costa Rica more than a decade ago to answer a suite of theoretical and applied questions about tropical forest recovery across broad temporal and spatial scales. Although the employee will be based primarily at the Arboretum, the employee will make periodic trips to Costa Rica, especially in June-July during annual field sampling.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING:  PhD from an accredited college or university in Plant Ecology or related field.  EXPERIENCE:  Experience conducting complex spatial/quantitative statistical analyses. Evidence of strong scholarship, including high-impact peer-reviewed publications. 

ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Demonstrated knowledge of tropical plant conservation and restoration science literature, and of immersion in these fields for PhD program. Strong interest in advancing these fields of research especially as they pertain to conservation issues in Hawai‘i and the Neotropics. Demonstrated ability to plan, conduct, and complete independent research projects. Excellent quantitative and analytical skills, well versed in use of R and other related programs for analysis of data. Strong social and collaborative skills. Ability to take the lead in data analysis. Ability to speak and understand Spanish, preferred. Sensitivity to different cultural norms in areas where research is conducted. 

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to conduct periodic field work in remote locations and, potentially, under adverse conditions such as inclement weather, rugged landscapes and on steep slopes.
