The National Tropical Botanical Garden is now accepting applications for a Casual Horticulture Assistant.

The Horticultural Assistant assists in the cultivation, care and regular maintenance of
plants in the nursery, occasionaly supports plant records, works closely with interns,
volunteers, and collaborates with Horticulture and Science and Conservation departments to
ensure successful transition of plants from the wild to the Nursery and from the Nursery into
garden collections or into the wild.


● High school diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or a
related field desired. Relevant work experience may be used to substitute for education.


● Knowledge of Kaua’i native plants and native plant propagation is strongly desired.


Must be able to work outdoors all day in variable weather conditions at tasks demanding walking,
fine motor skills, machinery operation, and lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds (more w/
assistance). Must be able to stand for long periods of time, crouch, squat, stretch and work with
hands on a variety of tasks.


Requires use of pesticides, herbicides, and other horticultural chemicals to minimize transfer of
nursery pests to other sites. Will be expected to work on a flexible time basis in order to check
plants on weekends and make pesticide applications when visitors and other personnel are absent.

Wage range: $18.30-$19.80 DOE
