Schedule: 24 hours per week, must include Tuesdays and Wednesdays

We are seeking a passionate and culturally-grounded individual to support a two-year project to ensure that kalo continues to reclaim its rightful place in our daily island food culture. We hope to increase the number of young kalo eaters on Kauaʻi and bring kalo, in all of its forms, into schools through field trips, student-led projects, USDA compliant recipes, and cafeteria staff training sessions. We will also be supporting a kalo farmer grants program and ongoing work to better support Kaua‘i kalo farmers.
The Kalo Specialist will support the development, aggregation, processing, and distribution of kalo products to schools and commercial customers, working with several kalo farmers across the island, while supporting the general operations of the overall project as needed. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Intaking products from kalo farmers at various points around the island
- Processing, packaging, and ensuring compliant storage of kalo products, including following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and food safety guidelines
- Ensuring proper storage and inventory management of kalo products
- Safely driving a refrigerated van to pickup and deliver kalo products to schools, school groups, and other commercial customers through the food hub
- Developing strong relationships with kalo farmers and school cafeteria staff, collecting feedback and providing technical assistance and support as needed
- Supporting school communications and product order processing
- Managing paperwork and processes for aggregation and distribution of products, including ordering from farmers and intaking orders from schools as needed
- Assist with kalo recipe development, cafeteria worker kalo trainings, and distribution of products to school groups for taste tests and feedback sessions
- Sharing aloha with everyone in the kalo supply chain to maintain excellent relationships
- Assisting Project Director in the operations of the overall project as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A passion for sharing cultural foods with keiki in meaningful ways, with a foundational understanding of Hawaiian food culture and related language
- Organized, passionate, and proactive go-getter who is driven by the importance of the work to excel
- Previous hands-on experience with kalo preparation
- Technical ability, including Google Docs/Drive/Sheets
- Clean driving record and safe driving skills
- Ability to obtain a Food Handler’s card
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including repeatedly lifting boxes of up to 50lbs and driving and/or standing for up to 8 hours
