Regular, Part-Time (25-50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Social Sciences, Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Primary work location will be at the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) office on O‘ahu, Maui, Hawai‘i Island, or Kaua‘i. Telework (from employee’s residence city and state) may be permissible subject to review and approval by Principal Investigator and RCUH. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $1,000/Mon (@25% FTE) up to $2,000/Mon (50% FTE)

DUTIES:  Works with the HCRI Native Hawaiian Cultural Resource Facilitator to identify and fulfill Hawaiian language, culture, and history needs for the various projects within each program. Reviews documents (e.g., management plans, permits, presentations, island profiles, etc.) for accuracy of Hawaiian language. Collaborates with the cultural specialist to ensure cultural and historical references are correct. Develops linguistically accurate relevant outreach and other material in English and/or Hawaiian. Ensures that Hawaiian translations are accurate. Works with the facilitator to develop in reach materials and activities for DAR staff and conducts training to increase relevant baseline knowledge of Hawaiian language. Works with DAR and the cultural resource facilitator to create a cultural handbook and other reference materials for staff to increase Hawaiian language proficiency. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Hawaiian culture, Hawaiian language or related field including at least two (2) years of coursework or training in Hawaiian culture or language. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Hawaiian culture or Hawaiian language or in another field including at least two (2) years of coursework or training in Hawaiian culture or language and two (2) years of relevant work experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience with writing projects in Hawaiian.

KNOWLEDGE

Excellent knowledge of Hawaiian language. Familiarity with public education, outreach techniques, or cross-cultural communication.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to read and write fluently in Hawaiian. Demonstrated ability to produce professional and academic materials in Hawaiian and edit and proofread Hawaiian language documents. Demonstrated ability in English to speak clearly and produce clear and comprehensive reports and other written documents (e.g., proposals) requiring minimal review and editing, and using correct grammar and mechanics; read, comprehend, and analyze complex texts (e.g., laws, regulations, and policies). Ability to tailor information to target audiences. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to edit and proofread documents in Hawaiian and English. Ability to meet changing priorities and responsibilities and complete assignments on a timely basis. Must be a self-starter, goal-oriented, and highly organized. Ability to work with diverse user groups, cultures, and personalities. Must possess an understanding of the social and cultural environment of the locality. Ability to be a positive team player. Ability to remain resilient under varying circumstances while effectively meeting deadlines. Ability to be flexible with changing aspects and needs of job. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, staff from other government agencies, stakeholders, and the general public. Ability to work independently and to prioritize tasks. Ability to effectively conduct work remotely (e.g., telework) as applicable. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months. 

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Familiarity with natural resource management in Hawaiʻi. Experience creating, editing, and proofreading documents in Hawaiian and English for historical and cultural accuracy.
