Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), Hawai‘i Coral Reef Initiative (HCRI) and the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) located in He‘eia, Oahu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $1,300/Mon. (@50% FTE).
DUTIES: Assists with conducting mechanical removal of invasive plant and animal species and organic matter from selected areas using power hand tools, such as chainsaws and weed whackers. Assists with conducting work site maintenance, and equipment and tool care as directed. Assists with the implementation of sediment and nutrient reduction through maintenance of cleared areas and planting of native vegetation within a wetland with open ponds under appropriate oversight. Assists in coordinating volunteers and community outreach efforts. Assists with on-site tours to demonstrate restoration efforts. Helps provide training and guidance on functional restoration, and incorporating traditional and cultural knowledge to volunteers and community outreach groups. Documents data and updates daily field log. This is a junior position to the HCRI Heʻeia Wetland Field Assistant I. The employee must possess aptitude to perform the job duties, which are similar to those of the Assistant I, and will receive on-the-job training on procedures, equipment, and safety practices. Supervision and oversight appropriate to the level of ability demonstrated by the employee will be provided and adjusted with progression. With training and experience, the employee will be expected to perform the duties with increasing independence and responsibility.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
EXPERIENCE Up to one (0-1) year of experience conducting conservation, restoration, or similar activities in natural areas of Hawai’i.
KNOWLEDGE Familiarity with threats from alien species in Hawaiʻi’s natural environment.
ABILITIES & SKILLS Ability to comprehend and communicate well orally and in writing. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Ability to adhere to safety rules and practices pertaining to working in wetlands. Ability to learn to operate power hand tools and follow safety protocols. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete chainsaw training within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete certification in Wilderness First Aid/CPR within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted and up to a hundred (100) pounds of equipment assisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience performing restoration work in wetlands in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of safety practices and hazards pertaining to working in wetlands. Knowledge of power hand tools.
