(2) Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), Hawai‘i Coral Reef Initiative (HCRI) and the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) located in He‘eia, Oahu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $1,286.13/Mon. (@50% FTE)
DUTIES: Conducts mechanical removal of invasive plant and animal species and organic matter from selected areas using power hand tools, such as chainsaws and weed whackers. Conducts with work site maintenance, and equipment and tool care. Implements sediment and nutrient reduction through maintenance of cleared areas and planting of native vegetation within a wetland with open ponds. Coordinates volunteers and community outreach efforts. Leads on-site tours to demonstrate restoration efforts. Provides training and guidance on functional restoration, and incorporating traditional and cultural knowledge to volunteers and community outreach groups. Documents data and updates daily field log. This is a progression series job in which the employee will be expected to perform with increasing independence on progressively responsible duties. Quantity and quality of work is expected to increase as levels increase. Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee’s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING |
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. |
EXPERIENCE |
At least one (1) year of experience conducting conservation and restoration in natural areas of Hawai’i. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Knowledge of safety practices and hazards pertaining to working in wetlands. Knowledges of power hand tools. Working knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna, and threats from alien species, including invasive trees. |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Ability to comprehend and communicate well orally and in writing. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete chainsaw training within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete certification in Wilderness First Aid/CPR within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50 lbs.) unassisted and up to a hundred (100) pounds of equipment assisted. |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working on restoration projects focused on recovering natural areas and ecosystems, particularly in the He‘eia watershed vicinity. Experience conducting outreach and education with various size and age groups. |
