Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG) is seeking a part time Grounds and Maintenance Assistant in Kahului, Maui. MNBG is a 6-acre public botanical garden, with a mission to foster appreciation and understanding of Maui Nui’s plants and their role in Hawaiian cultural expression by providing a gathering place for discovery, education, and conservation.

Type: Part-time, 16 hours per week with optional 24 hours per week after probation period
Preferred schedule: Mondays, Fridays, and/or Saturdays, 7:30 am – 4 pm

Position Overview:
The Grounds and Maintenance Assistant assists in the overall care and maintenance of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens’ (MNBG) plant collections. S/he maintains, with minimal oversight, the garden and nursery areas of MNBG through watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, raking, herbicide application and other maintenance activities. S/he maintains, with minimal oversight, the water distribution lines and irrigation systems of MNBG, the plant collections, buildings and bathrooms, and informational signage. The Grounds and Maintenance Assistant supervises volunteers working in the garden, as needed. S/he assists in preparing for and breaking down special events. S/he interprets MNBG’s plant collection for visitors and occasionally leads educational activities for groups.
Required:
Ability to observe plant health and make basic adjustments needed to improve plant health. Ability to work outdoors in different weather conditions for up to 8 hours, including bending, lifting, and using hand tools. Ability to pay close attention to detail, be receptive to feedback and able to respond in an efficient and accurate manner. Ability to communicate accomplishments and problems to the team. Must have basic familiarity with computers and a current driver’s license.
Desired:
Knowledge of Native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plant species, Hawaiian endangered plant species, and Hawaiian environments and/or ecosystems. Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, traditions, practices, and language. Previous experience teaching or leading small group activities. Comfortable speaking before small groups.
