Summary

Midway (2 Positions) GS-7 Shorebird and Duck Team Leads. These positions will help lead the non-target team during this spring/summer’s seabird protection project at Midway. The Shorebird lead will guide shorebird hazing and care during the project (April-October). The duck team lead will guide capture and care of Laysan Ducks during the project (February-August).  Positions will require periodic camping. 

Duties

This is a temporary appointment intended for seasonal work that is less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year. It is expected this position will be terminated upon completion of the seasons work. The agency may non-competitively rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years who works less than 6 months or 1040 hours in their service year. At management's discretion, this appointment may be extended up to one-year with the possibility of extending an additional one-year.

As a Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of wildlife censuses and surveys.
  • Capture and apply tags on wildlife to gather physiological and spatial data
  • Analyze data using standard statistical methods in preparation of wildlife reports.
  • Provide work direction and guidance to biological technicians, volunteers, and YCC enrollees.
  • Use geographic information systems and wildlife survey techniques to conduct wildlife research.
  • Conduct field studies that involve considerable physical demands, such as frequent, extensive travel on foot; bending; crouching; and climbing; exertion from lifting and carrying equipment; and energy drain from cold, wet and windy weather.
  • Operate a variety of equipment such as outboard motorboats, four-wheel drive vehicles, light vehicles, small water craft, all-terrain vehicles and other equipment.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 12/17/2021 will be considered.

TEMPORARY 1039:

This is a full-time temporary position not-to-exceed 1 year that will total less than 1040 hours (6 months), excluding overtime in a service year. The service year is the calendar year that begins on the date of the employee's initial appointment in the agency. These appointments may be extended from year to year. Extensions of appointment without further competition may be granted based on work needs, funding, or any other condition of employment. The employee may be terminated or placed on an intermittent work schedule (no pre-scheduled tour of duty) at any time.

You may qualify at the GS-07 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrated your ability to provide technical support to professional biologists in completing all phases of a biological study or project including: project planning, logistical arrangements, field work, analysis of data, and completion of reports or other documents related to the project; leading a group of lower graded technicians in gathering field data;

OR

B. One full year of graduate education (18 semester/27 quarter hours) in biological sciences with course work directly related to the work of this position such as avian ecology, ornithology, wildlife management (birds), etc. (I understand that I must submit a copy of my transcript(s) to support my education);

OR

C.Have a combination of education and experience as listed above (I understand that I must submit a copy of my transcript(s) to support my education).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):

  • Technical knowledge of the principles, practices and terminology related to wildlife biology, wildlife management and related disciplines.
  • Ability to use geographic information system (GIS), aerial photography, survey techniques, and global positioning system.
  • Ability to use computer, automated data sytems, and statistical software programs to retrieve information and develop reports.
  • Ability to use small water craft, cars, trucks and farm tractors.
