LHWRP RESTORATION ASSISTANT – ID# 220304. 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  (2) Regular, Part-Time (50%-75% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Leeward Haleakala Watershed Restoration Partnership (LHWRP), located in Makawao on Maui, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $1,200-$2,694/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Implements LHWRP Management Plan action plans as directed by LHWRP management staff.  Assists in watershed restoration, research, and management activities for forests on Leeward Haleakala, which involves out-planting native plants, controlling non-native plants through mechanical and chemical means, and assisting in constructing and maintaining fence lines.  Assists in the design and implementation of research, monitoring sites, and data collection. Fieldwork requires the ability to drive project vehicles, and work in and around helicopters. Assists in the management of volunteer activities, organizes supplies, and coordinates and executes safe volunteer trips. Volunteer activities may involve collecting and cleaning seeds, planting seeds and seedlings, applying pesticides, fertilizing, weeding, collecting data, and constructing and maintaining fences. Assists in establishing vegetation, animal, and insect monitoring transects; forest pathogen stations; and other scientific research stations.  Assists in the preparation and reporting for peer-reviewed journal publications, technical reports, and presentations.  Collects Global Positioning System (GPS) data at project sites, enters into the Geographic Information System (GIS) program (ArcView), and produces maps of work completed.  Assists in collecting field data from monitoring transects and research sites.  Enters field data from vegetation transects and other scientific studies into database.  Assists in compiling and analyzing data for written reports.  Regularly maintains field equipment and notifies supervisors when major repairs or maintenance is required. Tracks supplies and equipment inventory. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (0-1) year of experience in dryland forest restoration and alien plant control in Hawai‘i.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Good knowledge of native and invasive Hawaiian biota and out-planting of native plants in the forest. Working knowledge of computers in word-processing, database, and GPS. Good knowledge of Hawaiian natural history, native animals, general botanical and ecological principles.  Good knowledge of Hawaiian culture, including ethnobotany.  Ability to identify most native and non-native plant species of leeward Maui by sight.  Ability to assist in setting up transects and stations, performing vegetation techniques (e.g., releve, count plots, and point intercept), and accurately record observed values.  Capable of being involved in complex community-based projects.  Ability to operate power tools, including chainsaws, weed eaters, generators, chipper, etc. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to lead safe and educational volunteer trips.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions:  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A-100) and sling-load course (A-219) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete rappelling and rope worker training within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted in isolated regions on irregular, unmarked terrain, often under adverse physical conditions, in remote areas. Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). Able to work in elevation up to 6,500 feet regularly. Ability to work in remote locations, which require transportation via helicopter.  Must be able to hike with backpack up to 12 miles over rough terrain or thick and unmarked trail conditions, camp in remote areas under inclement or climatically extreme conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Prior training and experience in application of herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides. Experience in maintaining tool and supply inventory.  Good knowledge and familiarity of geographical boundaries and landowners and managers of Leeward Haleakala.
