POSITION OVERVIEW
Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate to maintain the Gardens’ native plant display and buildings and assist with nursery plants. Duties include grounds maintenance such as mowing, raking, weed whacking, coordinating mulch and compost deliveries, mulching and spreading compost, fertilizing, watering, trimming and pruning, staking, controlling weeds manually, and applying herbicides* and other chemicals. The Horticulturalist coordinates the installation of new plant display beds including planting and treating plants for pest and disease problems and maintains and installs new irrigation systems to meet the needs of plantings. Affects repairs to buildings, tools, equipment, and signage alone, with the aid of other employees, or by experienced contractors as needed. Oversees safe and effective volunteer and intern training and work, and a safe environment for visitors, and occasionally interprets the plant collection for visitors. Implements the weekly “Weed and Pot Club” volunteer group and supervises other periodic volunteers. Assists in nursery and seed banking operations by planting seeds for germination testing and prioritizing species for the public landscape.
* While we recognize the inherent risks of using herbicide, we understand that it is a valuable management tool when used correctly. We no longer use Roundup (glyphosate) at MNBG, but in certain cases may use other herbicides, for example, horticultural vinegar, citrus oil, and selective herbicides.
SCHEDULE
Part to Full-time, 32-40 hours weekly
Wednesday and Saturday availability preferred.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus at least one year experience in landscape maintenance and installation, or an Associate’s degree or higher in botany, agriculture, or horticulture.
Ability to observe plant health and make basic adjustments needed to improve plant health.
Ability to pay close attention to detail, be receptive to feedback and able to respond in an efficient and accurate manner. Ability to communicate accomplishments and problems to the team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of Native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plant species, Hawaiian endangered plant species, and Hawaiian environments and/or ecosystems.
Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, traditions, practices, and language.
COMPENSATION
$17/hr with benefits and paid time off.
