Job Description :
A forestry research lab at UC Berkeley is seeking a flexible, part-time research assistant for 2.5 months on Hawai’i Island. The project examines how invasive species impact the ecohydrology of native forests, in collaboration with scientists at UC Berkeley and USGS. The research assistant will assist with fieldwork and data collection in mesic and wet forest sites, laboratory sample processing, and data organization. This is a paid research opportunity.
Applicants must be able to work a flexible work week of 20 or fewer hours from September 15 - November 30, 2019. The position will include field work, lab work, and computer work. Field days may be long (up to 10 hours), and at least 2 camping trips may be required. Other days will have much shorter work hours.
The successful applicant will gain skills in ground-based lidar, forestry and plant physiology sampling methods, data organization, and isotope analysis. This will also be an opportunity to meet scientists and conservationists from agencies and non-profits across Hawai’i Island.
