RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Education Program Manager, responsible for teaching environmental field programs to elementary and middle school children and the wider community. Sharing knowledge of environmental science and Hawai'i's flora & fauna in a variety of outdoor conditions and environments. Leading day camps during school intersessions and summers. Occasionally teaching weekend programs including birthday parties. Assisting in all aspects of program preparation, set-up, and clean-up at field sites. Interacting directly with HNC staff, docents, and volunteers, as well as students, teachers, and parents. Working on other varied projects as needed, including maintenance of facilities and contributing to program development. Supporting the Hawai'i Nature Center's overall mission of fostering environmental stewardship through positive experiences in the outdoors.
QUALIFICATIONS: B.A. or B.S. degree required. Must have a passion for the environment, educating youth, and working outdoors. Ability to work well with all ages (3 years old through adult). Commitment to environmental education and genuine interest in working with children. Personal skills needed include: dynamic personality, well-developed communication skills, flexibility and adaptability, creativity, and the ability to both lead and follow directions. Must be comfortable with remote supervision and have the ability to work in a team setting and independently with enthusiasm and professionalism. Must be able to work extended hours in natural elements (sun, rain, wind) and be able to carry up to 50 pounds of weight.
SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience teaching children and basic knowledge of environmental science and/or Hawai'i's natural history preferred. Bachelor's degree in natural sciences, environmental studies, or education-related field preferred. Must be willing to have background clearance performed. Valid driver's license preferred.
HOURS/PAY: Pay ranges from $11 - $13/hour depending on experience.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES: In addition to part-time educator positions, the Hawai'i Nature Center is also accepting applications for volunteer Teaching Docents. An ideal position for those interested in environmental education but without the time commitment or rigorous skill set needed for the Environmental Educator position. Teaching Docents have the opportunity to develop hands-on, outdoors teaching experience, and build a knowledge base in both natural sciences and Hawaiian natural history. Docents may apply for the Environmental Educator position when openings become available.
